PRESIDENT AKUFO-ADDO RECEIVES SERBIA’S HIGHEST NATIONAL AWARD

President Nana Addo

The President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has been decorated with the Medal of the Republic of Serbia, the highest state order of Serbia, by the President of the Republic of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, at a ceremony on Monday, 11th October 2021, at the seat of the Serbian Presidency in Belgrade.

President Akufo-Addo received the award “for exceptional merits in developing and strengthening co-operation and friendly relations between the Republic of Serbia and the Republic of Ghana.”

The order was awarded by the decree of the President of Serbia on the sidelines of the ceremony to celebrate the founding of the 60th anniversary of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).

Earlier in the day, the President delivered a statement at the plenary session of the Conference, where he indicated that since the days of Ghana’s first President, Kwame Nkrumah, one of the five (5) historic founding fathers of NAM, Ghana has remained a faithful adherent of its principles, i.e., respect for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of States, non-interference in the domestic affairs of States, and non-aggression against States.

“We believe that the strength of this Movement is determined not just by its numbers, but, more significantly, by the attachment to the principles that founded it.,” the President said.

Recounting the words of Ghana’s first leader, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, at the 1961 Conference in Belgrade, who bemoaned the hesitance of the world’s super powers to disarm, President Akufo-Addo stated that “60 years later, the great powers have not disarmed, neither has the threat of nuclear war receded. They are still as powerful as they were then, and this has been highlighted by the COVID pandemic, and the unsavoury politics of vaccine nationalism we are currently witnessing.”

He bemoaned the fact that member states of NAM have become global power play, and are subject to the benevolence of powerful countries, who give out their hoarded supplies at their own pace, not necessarily in tandem with realities.

“The need for self-reliance today in the global south is as important as positive neutralism was in the era of the Cold War. The impact of the pandemic on our populations has been severe. We must stand shoulder-to-shoulder, and be resolved to ensure that we are better prepared for future pandemics,” President Akufo-Addo said.

He continued, “We must not miss the opportunity of this occasion to take far-reaching decisions for a more equitable and balanced world, based on the principle of the equality of sovereign States. We should continue to work towards the global objectives of peace, development and inter-dependence.”

The President reiterated Ghana’s belief that the Non-Aligned Movement is as relevant in this 21st century as it was in the 20th century, in protecting the interests of the developing world.

“There will be challenges but, working hand-in-hand, we can move ahead together, and, indeed, much further, more so, when, through our co-operation and solidarity, we achieve the restructuring of the global financial system to facilitate the rapid development of our economies. The next sixty (60) years of our Movement must mark its empowerment to meet the wishes and aspirations of our peoples for development, dignity and diversity,” he added.

According to President Akufo-Addo, hangars for the helicopters, located at the National Police Training School, have been completed, and six (6) officers, who will fly these helicopters, have completed their training in South Africa.

The President made this known on Friday, 1st October 2021, when he delivered a speech at the graduation ceremony of the 50th Cadet Officers’ Course, at the Police Training Academy, at Tesano, Accra.

Speaking at the event, the President noted that Government, in recognition of the difficulties and dangers confronting police personnel in the discharge of their duties, remains committed to resourcing the Service, by the provision of adequate personnel and logistics to enable them deliver on their mandate.

“To this end, since I came to office in January 2017, a total of five hundred and sixty-eight (568) vehicles, including fifteen (15) operational buses, have been presented by Government to the Service, a feat unprecedented in its history,” he said.

Apart from the existing Formed Police Unit (FPU) in Accra, President Akufo-Addo revealed that an additional twenty-two (22) light armoured vehicles have been procured for use by the FPUs to be established in November in the Northern, Upper East and Ashanti Regions.

In the next one-and-half years, FPUs will be established in the remaining regions that do not have FPUs.

“Two hundred (200) motorbikes have also been distributed to members of the Community Policing initiative to boost the presence of the police in our communities. Modern communication equipment and four thousand, five hundred (4,500) fragmentation jackets have been procured and delivered to the Service to protect officers, and help ensure effective policing,” President Akufo-Addo said.

He continued, “At the beginning of my mandate, in 2017, there were eight hundred (800) CCTV installations in the country for surveillance. At the end of my first term, the figure had gone up to six thousand, five hundred (6,500), and, by the end of the year, another three thousand, five hundred (3,500) would have been added, making a total of almost eleven thousand (11,000) in the country.”

Government, the President added, has strengthened the cybercrime-fighting capabilities of the Service, through the setting up of a Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) Centre at the National Communications Authority (NCA).

Towards protecting the country’s maritime waters, and its offshore oil and gas installations, the President revealed that the Ministry of the Interior has procured three (3) Alligator Silver boats in fulfilment of the pledge he made to expand and resource the Marine Police, in order to help them work with the Ghana Navy.

In addition to retooling the forensics lab of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), he said that, for the first time in the history of the Department, crime officers are given a monthly allowance to support their investigations.

“On addressing the housing needs of the Service, the construction of three hundred and twenty (320) housing units at the National Police Training School is at an advanced stage of completion. Work is ongoing on the construction of a barracks at Kwabenya, to replace the one adjacent to the DVLA at 37, which is not fit for purpose. A new mechanical workshop for the Service is also being constructed at Bohye, near Haatso,” he added.

In addition to the yearly increments of salaries for all police personnel, Government, he said, has placed them, like the other members of the security services, under the CAP 30 pension scheme.

“Clearance has been given for the Police Service to recruit some five thousand (5,000) more personnel to augment the manpower base of the Service, in a bid to meet the recommended UN police-civilian ratio of one-to-five hundred (1:500). Prior to this, a total of four thousand (4,000) persons were recruited into the Police Service from 2018 to 2020,” he added.

If I’m anti-Mahama and so what? He sponsored Kofi Adams against me – Boateng Gyan accuses JDM

Wofa Yaw Boateng Gyan fmr NDC Nat Org

Former NDC National Organizer, Yaw Boateng Gyan has lambasted critics labeling him as anti-Mahama.

According to him, the former President sponsored Kofi Adams to kick him out as National Youth Organiser of the NDC.

For this reason, he said any critic in his/her right senses should not blame him if he decides to hit back at the former President who he claims surrounded himself with ‘small boys’ in the party.

“What kind of intimidation is this? Why do some people who joined the party along the way want to push us out?…we have suffered for the establishment of the party and nobody can drive me away. If I am anti-JM and so what? Have they investigated to find out if JM is pro-Yaw Gyan?”

“….we are losing quality leaders in the party and so if he [Duffuor] has decided to come to sacrifice himself for the party and save the party, what is wrong with it? We have reduced political activism to youthful exuberance. We are just toying with governance,” Yaw Boateng Gyan said in an interview on Okay FM.

Lambasting a section of the media for making the claim that he is anti-Mahama, Yaw Boateng Gyan argues that if that was the case he would not have insisted the ex-president went unopposed in previous primaries.

Yaw Boateng Gyan and Fmr Prez Mahama

He goes on to rubbish claim of a feud between himself and John Dramani Mahama, insisting that he is unaware if he has wronged him in any way.

“When Prof Mills died, I was one of those who insisted that Mahama must go unopposed in Kumasi and after he became the President, he sponsored Kofi Adams to kick me out of my position when I was contesting for re-election. People said it at that time but I didn’t believe it but now I believe it due to what is happening. There is this speculation that Mahama and I are not on good terms but I don’t know what I have done to wrong him,” he said.

The alleged feud between Yaw Boateng Gyan and ex-president Mahama has been fueled after the former NDC National Organiser vowed to campaign for Dr. Kwabena Duffuor if he declares his intention to contest for the flagbearer position in the party’s next primaries.
