E-levy Brouhaha: “Shut-up And Learn From Us”- Musah Superior To NDC

Musah Superior

Vociferous Musah Superior says he totally bamboozled over the posture of the rank-and-file of the NDC towards the E-levy initiative.

Following the decision by the opposition to vote against the passage of the bill as spelt out at their town hall meeting held in Kumasi on Monday, the former Tamale Mayor said members of the umbrella party are behaving as though they are living in antiquity and are out touch with the knowledge on the relevance of digitization of which E-levy is an offspring.

According to the NDC as reported by Ghanaian Times “all the 137 MPs will vote against it and even if the government decides to push it, we will not be part of its implementation”.

Rebutting the foregoing, Hon Musah Superior described that as a gross display of ignorance.

“They better shut-up and learn in silence from us. They (NDCs) need more schooling on the collosal loads of merits which the E-levy will offer the country and that will save the nation from their false views and interpretations”.

Hon Musah Superior- NPP General Secretary hopeful set the record straight that the E-ley is not something that will impose any economic burden to the citizenry.

He said it will offer the citizenry more benefits especially in the area of employment and construction plus other sectors.”

Responsible small scale mining the way to go – VP Bawumia

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia

“All too often, our problem solving tends to focus more on chasing and punishing wrongdoers and less on recognizing and rewarding those who do right. This is what makes this awards different.

“This award recognizes players in the small scale mining space who, despite the temptation to join the wrong-doing band wagon, have decided to stay within the relevant regulatory framework of the country and operate responsibly.”

These were the words of the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia when he delivered congratulatory remarks at the maiden “Responsible Small Scale Mining Awards” organized by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources in Accra on Wednesday, December 22, 2021.

Designed to recognize and reward responsible miners and other stakeholders in the small scale mining industry, the Responsible Small Scale Mining Awards is to provide public affirmation for those who operate within the law, and reinforce Government’s desire to achieve sustainable, responsible small scale mining working in partnership with all stakeholders.

At a ceremony attended among others by the Chief of Staff, Mrs Frema Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources Hon Samuel Abu Jinapor and his two Deputies, Hon George Mireku Duker and Hon Benito Owusu Bio, Chief Executive of the Minerals Commission, and other stakeholders in the mining industry, Bright Kwabena Obeng of Obeng Mining Ventures was adjudged the Overall Best Small Scale Miner.

In brief remarks, Vice President Bawumia indicated that despite its significant contribution to Ghana’s economy, gold mining, especially small scale mining’s negative impact on our forests, waters and farming have increasingly become major concerns.

Small scale mining, he noted, is not only competing with agriculture for land but is damaging waters and imposing huge costs on water systems, hence the Akufo-Addo government’s decision to re-engineer the governance framework of the sector through diverse interventions in an attempt to sanitize the Small Scale Mining (SSM) subsector in particular.

Veep Dr Mahamudu Bawumia

Government, he reiterated, would continue to play its watchdog role in ensuring compliance with the law while working with stakeholders to address the growing complexities in the mining sector.

“As a government the responsibility of being accountable for the stewardship of this sector by ensuring good governance in the exploitation of the minerals resources is not lost on us. We will continue to implement policies that will bring about a win-win situation for both government and industry players through effective collaboration with all well-meaning stakeholders like the Ghana Association of Small Scale Miners,” he assured.

Dr Bawumia commended the Small Scale Miners, saying, “To the membership of the Ghana Small Scale Miners Association (GNASSM), I wish to acknowledge your cooperation with government in the implementation of the various interventions.

“Even though some of these interventions have affected you in one way or the other, most of you decided to work with government in streamlining the sector by doing the right thing.

“It is, therefore, worthwhile recognizing your efforts for choosing to regularize your activities and continue to apply yourselves well to the obligations imposed on you by your mineral rights.

“I believe the awards will go a long way to motivate you to continue doing the right things when they matter most. The award should also increase your sense of responsibility in the generality of your membership towards the natural environment. So that we shall together achieve the desired sustainability for the subsector.”

VP Bawumia launches Policy, Guidelines for National E-Pharmacy

The Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia

The Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has launched the policy and guidelines for the National E-Pharmacy programme as part of Government’s ongoing efforts to improve access to and delivery of health care to Ghanaians.

When fully operational in 2022, the E-Pharmacy programme is expected to transform access to pharmaceutical care in the country and make Ghana one of a handful of countries with a national scale e-pharmacy in the world.

Speaking in Accra on Wednesday, December 22, 2021 Vice President Bawumia recalled that a few years ago, at the Annual General Meeting of Pharmacists, he challenged the Pharmacists to explore greater ways of infusing technology into their operations in ways that among others, improves access, efficiency and the availability of medicines across the country, especially in rural and less urban areas.

The challenge, he said, has since been taken up through the leadership of the Pharmacy Council, Pharmaceutical Society and other stakeholders, leading to the creation of the policy and guidelines for the national e-pharmacy.

“Today, we are here to launch a top tier innovation that will transform access to pharmaceutical care in Ghana, complementing the Government’s attempt to improve access to and delivery of health care to our more than 30 million population,” he stated.

Government recognizes the gaps in our health infrastructure and is committed to filing as many of the gaps as possible in building our human resources, in our physical infrastructure, and in all the complementary aspects of our health system, Dr Bawumia pledged.

“While tackling inadequate infrastructure in the health sector, it is disheartening to see people spend so much time moving from one pharmacy to the other in search of medication.

“The innovation in improving pharmacy access to our people through E-Pharmacy can be a game changer in safe-guarding the future of our youth and ensuring rational and responsible access to medicines on a scale we have not yet been able to achieve.

“Today, we are adding to the growing list of digitized platforms. E-pharmacy should help us address concerns for the proliferation of fake drugs, because there will be a link to the database of the Food and Drugs Authority to authenticate the approval or otherwise of the medicines on offer; check unlicensed pharmacy operations; reduce disparities in the cost of medicines and tackle some of the major administrative and delivery issues that affect the practice of pharmacy.”

Pharmacist to Patient Ratio

The introduction of this cutting-edge health technology, he emphasized, should help tackle at least 4 critical concerns in the healthcare system: reduce Pharmacist to Patient ratio which is currently five times higher than the ratio recommended by the World Health Organization; improve confidentiality and privacy of patient medical records; minimize wrong self-diagnosis and self-medication; and reduce counterfeit and substandard medication.

“At its full implementation, the National E-pharmacy platform will enable the public to obtain genuine medicines from accredited pharmacies.

“The global e-pharmacy market is worth about $81 billion today and it is expected to grow to grow to $244 billion by 2027. With the national E-Pharmacy platform, Ghana will be part of this new pharmaceutical digital economy. The evidence from India also indicates that the national e-pharmacy is likely boost pharmaceutical sales by between 100-200%. It is therefore a win-win for all.

“As we embark on this new path, please do not hesitate to give feedback to Pharmacy Council so that the policy and the system can be improved continuously with the ultimate goal of making it easier and safer for Ghanaians to access medicines in a responsible manner.”

Vice President Bawumia to launch e-pharmacy digital platform tomorrow

The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, will, on Wednesday December 22, launch the e-pharmacy digital platform in Accra.

At his recent digital economy public lecture at Ashesi University, the Vice President revealed that steps had been taken to digitize the operations of pharmacies in the country, and the realisation of this vision, is the latest hallmark in government’s digitization drive, which has seen the digitization of many government sectors and services.

The digitization of pharmacies, which will have the nation’s pharmacies converged on one digital platform, is aimed at addressing difficulties of roaming around looking for medicines in pharmacies and, promoting competitive pricing and reducing the ratr of drug abuse and the sale of fake drugs to unsuspecting members of the public.

Through a mobile phone, as well as mobile money interoperability and universal QR Code services, the Ghanaian public will be able to enter their prescriptions into the digital platform, selct of pharmacy of their choice, pay for their medicines and have them delivered to their homes comfortably, without having to move around from one pharmacy to the other.

The e-pharmcy is a culmination of a challenge the Vice President threw at the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana.

As part of government’s digitization drive, Dr. Bawumia, in 2019, challenged the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana to digitize the operations of pharmacies in the country.

Following the directive, the Pharmacy Council worked in collaboration with the Office of the Vice President to ensure the successful realisation of the e-pharmacy.
